Crimson Phoenix painted by Hokusai

“Phoenix”, by Katsushika Hokusai, the creature’s crimson plumage and feathers glowing in dramatic contrast to the indigo blue background. Hokusai painted this crimson phoenix on the ceiling of the Higashimachi Festival Float, now kept at the Hokusai-kan Museum in Obuse, Nagano Prefecture, in 1844 at the age of 85. A copy of this painting now adorns one of the walls of our office.
